Clubhouse is a platform that allows you to engage in conversation with people, share knowledge and make new contacts in an accessible way. The app operates on a drop-in audio system, enabling you to have digital conversations. It is, as it were, a live podcast, to which various speakers can be invited and added. Furthermore, Clubhouse is the first social media platform where you don’t need to look at your screen to be active.
Anyone can start a so-called ‘room’. You can also start a private room, in which case only invited guests can listen in. Listeners can ‘raise their hand’ and, once they’ve been admitted to the conversation by the person who started the room, they can ask questions. This sparks interesting conversations and creates value for everyone in the room.
Clubhouse operates on an invitation-only basis, meaning that (for now) only iOS users can download the app. You also need to be invited by someone who is already registered with Clubhouse. This ensures an active user base and high engagement.
What makes Clubhouse so popular? Due to COVID-19, many things have become inaccessible and many (in-person) gatherings have been cancelled. Clubhouse makes it possible to gain new knowledge, get to know people and create value – for yourself and for other Clubhouse users – all from the comfort of your sofa.
Clubhouse is also of interest to organisations or brands, as it gives you the opportunity to share your company’s expertise with users. If you want to be successful as a brand on Clubhouse, you need to focus on creating value rather than on selling your products or services. After all, the platform is all about authenticity and building a community. You can engage with your audience by striking up conversations and reach a new potential audience on the spot.
At the moment, very few companies are active on Clubhouse. One company that is already making clever use of the app is Figma, a design software programme. They organise so-called ‘Figma and Chill’ rooms, where tips and tricks on using Figma are shared. This is a clever way to create valuable content for existing Figma users, whilst also attracting new ones.
Is it worth the hype? DRIIVN has tested it and we’re impressed: you listen more attentively and feel more part of the conversation. Who knows, maybe our next TGIF will take place on Clubhouse!
